Across the Marsh Curriculum
Discover Identity. Build Resilience. Heal Through Story.
Across the Marsh is a transformative Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum anchored in the emotionally powerful documentary of the same name. Designed for middle and high school students, this experience-centered program uses storytelling, reflection, and creativity to guide learners through the complexities of identity, trauma, and healing.
What It Is
This four-part curriculum blends SEL best practices with real-life narratives—helping students explore who they are, where they come from, and who they want to become. Rooted in the CASEL framework and culturally responsive pedagogy, Across the Marsh goes beyond traditional SEL by centering students' lived experiences.
Key Learning Outcomes
Self-Awareness: Students reflect on personal identity, emotions, and values.
Social Awareness: Learners engage with themes of family, forgiveness, and culture.
Self-Management: Goal-setting and journaling exercises promote emotional regulation.
Relationship Skills: Role-plays and dialogue sessions build empathy and communication.
Responsible Decision-Making: Students evaluate real-world choices through the lens of the film.

Watch segments of the Across the Marsh documentary
Engage in reflective journaling and identity mapping
Create a mixed-media personal identity project
Write a “Letter to My Future Self”
Build a personal growth plan rooted in SEL principles
Why It Matters
Students facing trauma, loss, or cultural disconnection often struggle to find their voice. Across the Marsh gives them space to process, connect, and grow—with support. It’s not just a curriculum—it’s a catalyst for healing and belonging.
